"Or how Lacies shop in Folkestone finally tears down the last of its original wooden shelving and replaces it with modern 21st Century designs".
Work Commences
After agreement made with Mathews Shop fitters the previous week workmen from that company arrives to start work at 7.30am on Monday morning 1st June, 2009. It is ironic that it was these people who did the modern fittings we had put in all those years ago. That was the right hand of the shop, today they have a much more difficult job of removing the original wooden shelving which we estimated had been there for some 40 year. Any older and they might become museum pieces maybe ??

In the process of peeling back the layers of history as it were, the workmen found some remnants from the previous owner including green shield stamps and what we think may be part of family photograph in a pub somewhere. Apparently the shop in those days would have been about half the size with a dividing wall between the shop and a living space in the rear complete with fireplace where the shopkeeper would anxiously await the tingle of a bell as a customer came through the front door.

The following images were all taken on Wednesday 3rd June, a little bit of history for us on on of the warmest days of the year so far. Sue took these gorgeous picture of the East Kent store after its transformation. Parliament may have been in melt down but here at Lacies we are still working hard to make our stores absolutely first rate businesses.
Is this indeed the way to the promised land ???
