Easter Monday April 25th 2011
This long holiday period has given us a bit of a quandary as ot when to open up the shop. Bank holidays mean no postal collection so no means to send out mail order parcels. They are also a bit of a lottery with customers for many its family time and a non starter for a few it might be the only window they have for their unusual "past time". Today is shite or bust for our local football team Dover Athletic by 5pm will know whether its another season over or whether hope continues for a play off place.
For those who've yet ot see it you could od worse than visit our new Wigs website www.fantasywigs.co.uk

A Strange Tale of Lacies & The Homeless Man !!
I thought I would tell my story before I forgot the details. It all happened last Thursday in what seemed a fairly normal day I was upstairs on the computer as usual with Chris, our own pocket Scharhorst downstairs. I spotted Bill on the landing in some distress. What's up I asked him. Bill replied that no one cared about him and that his house had just burnt down. It was quite difficult but I got the jist. His house had caught fire; and that he had spent the previous night in the William Harvey Hospital. They had then either discharged him and then sent him in a taxi to his burnt out hpuse. Now that was really out of order. I promised I would help him get a new home. He told me that he had spent thre last night walking round the streets more or less aimlessly and that his legs hurt.
So I told Chris I would help Bill by taking him down to the council and get him somewhere to stay that night. I took the little red van to the council's modern offices down the town. We fairly quickly met a nice lady who seemed very helpful she offered maybe a B&B. She took his details and used them to contact I assume some sort of mental health authority. I say this as soon as I got home via the doctors surgery (where a attempt to get medication was stalled by a older lady in a mini skirt told us no doctors were available as they were away for the afternoon on a course.) a psychiatric nurse named Joseph dully arrived. It turned out he was Bill's mental health nurse who had come to help. This did not go down well with Bill who said he had a giant needle and was going to him inject him with some nasty medication.
Bill was asked by Joseph to accompany him but Bill refused. He still would go to the Councils Offices for another appointment but wanted to buy some clothes. Those he was wearing were covered in paint and all ihs clothes had been worn for some time. Anyway before we went to the council again I took him shopping where he bought everything form underwear to a woolly fleece.. We went into the offices met the same helpful lady and went into a private room there waiting was Joseph. I was asked by the lady whose name I forgot if I would leave the room and collect the rest of f Bill's clothes form the van. As soon as we left she pulled me aside and informed me that Bill was going to be sectioned by Joseph in that room.
So imagine my surprise when on leaving the council's doorway I sighted Bill speeding ahead of me. He accompanied me to the car and pleaded to be driven away. Why I asked. Bill said he was afraid of this man and his needle, everyone was after him the police were going to imprison him they were in his opinion killers. I thought tat the time it was best to drive him back to Lacies where in the flat I allowed him to change into his clean clothes and gave him several cups of teas.
I felt I really had to tell Bill I couldn't put him up I really didn't have the room. Stoically Bill said OK and a few minutes later disappeared down the road. I was concerned and contacted Joseph who had phoned the police already about 4 times. They were going to raid the shop but couldn't as it was private premises. After Bill had left I contact them as I was worried poor old Bill was going to be homeless and ruin his health by endlessly wandering round the streets that night. They apparently do a circuit in a police car and couldn't find him. My colleague at 5pm phoned them again they dully did a circuit and couldn't find Bill. What annoyed me about my police contact was that it all took so long and on being put thru to Folkestone it turned out out only to be a desk devoted to Folkestone in the Maidstone police H.Q.. The lack of local knowledge and continuity was very in evident. Every time I rang I had to start again I felt this despite giving them the reference number Joseph gave him.
It was now getting dark and cold.We closed the shop still no news. I said to Ken we would go and look for him and at 8.10 PM we went out in the van more in hope than anything to find him. Two minutes later in Tram Road we found him I used Ken's phone and called the police again. And yet again it was Maidstone and a officer who was more interested in knowing about me that helping to Bill. I later found out this call wasn't even logged. The lack of local knowledge and continuity is frightening g. No wonder there are numerous cases where scandalous vulnerable people get away with literally murder eg the Baby P case. .
That night was I couldn't;t sleep without worrying bout poor old Bill pounded the streets. The next morning as early as I could I phoned the police no they said he hadn't been picked up. I went on my bike and cycled round the area and on sight of him. I spoke to a couple of helpful people Mrs Plummer and the Butcher to keep an eye out. It was only when I contacted the local Mental health service that a familiar voice reassured me. Sure enough it was the mental health nurse Joseph whose good news was that Bill HAD actually been picked up by the police at 9 PM that night. He had been sectioned and was now in WIlliam Harvey hospital. Only later did I learn that he had been moved to Maidstone as the specialist suite in Ashford was full. So much for care in the community. Previously Bill had lived in sheltered accommodation where he was free to do what he liked but was looked after by a good care team. This had subsequently been closed assuming to save money.
CARE IN THE COMMUNITY DOESN'T WORK WHEN WILL THEY EVER REALISE COST CUTTING COSTS LIVES !!

A Day Off to Visit A Truely Historic Village
For osme reason today I decided to go with the Grom to explore the historic vikllage of Chilham between Ashford and Canterbury. And what an incredibly well preserved and picturesque village it turned out ot be,. We drove into the village and parked at the bottom of Turners Hill in a rainy miserable Sunday. We then walked into the square f this small but compact village with the church at one end and Castle, which is really a Jacobean country house at the other end. Here's some of the photos I took.

The Blog Is Back - sorry for the break !!
This was unavoidable due to computer failure. aBasically the computer we stored this page on died and we have been trying to replace and reinstall Dreamweaver. Which we now have done successfully.
Well what has happened since our last posting. We have now bedded down with all our remaining Hove stock incorporated into the shop at Folkestone which is now bulging with stock. Am now getting used to life without the Hove shop being there. At first this was very difficult as I was so used to ringing Mish and more recently the lovely Shelly and chatting and swopping stories of how we were doing in the shop that day. Now seevral weeks have passed: Brighton Dave still rings for a chat now and then but generally I have gotten used not to having Hove Lacies and not going there on a Friday which I do miss quite a bit. But heyho life goes on and we now concentrate on making Laices Folkesotne into a very friendly haven for both transpeople and nontranspeople alike which it really has become.

What A Difference A Week Makes - Sad Farewells ...
-+`
Above are the two different faces of Lacies in January 2011. The first Shelly our fantastic shop assistant says her farewells as the doors are finally closed and locked for the last time at Lacies in Portland Road. We said our farewells to our neighboursa especially Angie and Max at the electrical store and we then gave in all the keys to Graves & Pilcher in the centre of bustling Brighton. It iwll be strange not to go to Hove to man the store anymore and even stranger not to hear the dulcet tones of Shellys voice over the phone. Mish also will be sadly missed, she popped in on Monday ot collect a hoover and remarked on the closure of the shop as the end of an era. This sentiment was echoed even in th elocal Tesco's by a lady on the check out who muttered those exact same words.
Lacies in Folkesotne (as photoed right) is still very much opren and packed ot the gunnels with stock form both shops and has already seen its first Sussex customers on Saturday when a TV from near Lewes paid us a visit all mormning there and definatley made the most of things. If you can't make the journey you can order online and even collect form a Brighton address if required.

Verdict on Lacies closure Hove never the same again !!!
Well thats the conclusion of at least one local news article on the effects of the Hove branch of Lacies closing. The article was in a website called Brighton and Hove independent news
neighbour are quoted as saying: “Some of us were concerned when Lacies first opened.
“I guess we thought that it might attract unsavoury characters and not really fit in with Hove’s more respectable image – this is an area with lots of families.
“But, while it’s not really my sort of shop, it’s been no trouble and I think a lot of people will be sad to see it go.
“We’ve lost a bit of the character in this place with its demise and we’ll have another empty shop in what should be a thriving shopping street.”
So if all we've done is to break down some of the worst sterotypes of transgendered people then there's one more converted person and part of the world. For the record those who were concerned about the shop opening were soem very unsavoury born again churchgoers based at a small chapel in a nearby back street. Who are nasty and hositile to transgender people a fact pointed out by the local Church of England vicar who tipped us off.
Let's hope the shop doesn't stay empty for long. Though I have a sneaking feeling that it will remain empty for a very long time. The shop managed by Graves & Pilcher, who have been very nice to us recently have had the shop on the market since October 2010 and the only people who have turned up to view the property have been a couple of funeral directors and I could not think of a less appropriate palce for such a shop. Er except there are a lot of very dodgy take aways all along Portland Road lol !!!
